Merry Christmas! 2014

Protect & Survive - An Illustrated Installation

Protect & Survive was first  exhibited in a surviving WW2 underground bunker situated behind The Print House in the heart of Dalston, London. Untouched for over 60 years, owned by the company Bootstrap, the bunker remains in its original state and features 5 separate cavernous rooms. Due to the setting and themes within the story, the bunkers sympathetic and emotive qualities seemed like an obvious and exciting choice for the project, breading a sense of claustrophobia, reference and uncanny unease.

Specialising in visual narrative and with an original background in theatre, it was my intention to bridge the gap between two-dimensional illustration and installation, moving the perceived medium of comics forward and pushing the boundaries of 'narrative art'. By placing the work within the bunker instead of a 'white box gallery', viewers are able to walk into the ‘set’ of the story or live comic, and in essence experience its theatre directly and freely and without forced direction.

The installation housed 70 illustrations which networked together to tell the Protect & Survive story. These framed pieces were hung alongside  a series of soft sculptures,  furniture, objects and scheduled performances, echoing the scenes and themes within the overall story and allowing both the viewers and actors to interact with the set and experience moments of the comic in 'real time'.

Due to the success of the first run, Protect & Survive will be exhibited again in early summer 2014. Watch this space...

Communion

Last year, i had the honour of working with Greg Hall and his team, creating artwork for the film Communion. This included making a sketch book for the making props for 'Maria', a rebellious, mexican punk artist as supplying artwork for a short animation taking place in the film. Here are a few images from both the process and the final artwork, as well as a link to the film itself. www.youtube.com/watch?v=kkAyNlBprVU
